Travel Illustration, Italy Illustrated Map, and Hand-Lettering by illustrator and artist Yaansoon
Personal project – I created this travel illustration for a recent blog post titled, “Italy Culinary Tour: A Foodie’s Illustrated Map,” which is the first post in the “Illustrated Travel Stories” blog series on Yaansoon.com. This is more or less a subjective Italy illustrated map, as it chronicles my personal adventures in a 2017 trip to Milan and the South of Italy, and the kinds of foods and places I’ve been to.
What I like about this map is how I was able to incorporate some of the “urban sketches” created on the trip, scanned direct from my sketchbook. Although my hand drawings are usually more controlled when I am creating artwork in the convenience of my studio, I like how these sketches are more flowy, offering me the opportunity to explore a new way of creating travel illustrations that tell a real story from real life.
As I mentioned earlier in this portfolio entry, I like to incorporate different cultural elements into my illustrations to give more depth to the artwork. Therefore, this illustrated map of Italy has been dressed with gouache motifs inspired by traditional Italian ceramics and plates. I believe to get a real taste of a country’s culinary culture, one needs to also explore the traditions, handcrafts, and other cultural aspects surrounding it. I like to weave these cultural elements into my illustrations, and in this instance I also created the hand-lettering with motifs inspired by Italian architecture and traditional food packaging.
Illustration Technique: The pattern in this Italy illustrated map is made up of gouache paintings that were first created on paper. The rest of the illustration was hand-drawn using pen and ink on paper, followed by digital painting in Adobe Photoshop.
