Travel Illustration, Illustrated Travel Series, and Hand-Lettering by illustrator and artist Yaansoon
Personal project – I created this hand-lettering travel illustration as the curtain raiser to my “Illustrated Travel Stories” blog series on Yaansoon.com. With the aim of developing a series of illustrated maps and other wanderlust-related artwork, I started this series as the perfect opportunity for me to relate visual stories from the 20+ countries I have been to across four very diverse continents. This illustrated travel series is not meant to share actual recipes from places like Italy, Morocco, Tunisia and Thailand. But there still is the element of culinary travel coverage, with the attempt of exploring ways to turn my travel journal sketches into finished illustrations. The series offers a diverse catalogue of different types of visual story-telling, starting with illustrated maps that chronicle delicious foods, handcrafts, architectural monuments, and moments encountered in any given trip. The aim here is to give the reader a sense of my personal experience coupled with observations and trivia collected from research as well as casual interviews conducted during and after the trip has taken place. With my background in investigative environmental journalism, and my deep infatuation with cultural diversity, I aim to scratch the surface on my travel illustration story-telling and create illustrations that engage you in an experience rather than just provide a checklist of places visited and foods tasted.
Illustration Technique: Hand-lettering and illustration hand-drawn using pen and ink on paper, followed by digital painting using Adobe Photoshop.
