I turned three of my food and travel illustrations into a pillow on Ohh Deer, a fun UK-based website specialising in illustration and design led gifts, and they’re now available for purchase (and to vote for) on the site.
Available for a limited time only, my Aubergine cushion, Land of the Nomads pillow, and My Organic Kitchen cushion, are all taking part in Ohh Deer’s Pillow Fight competition, to close on Monday 20th November 2017 (Update: Ohh Deer have extended the competition for one more week! Yay! Purchase of pillows was available until Feb 2018).
The pillows are based on illustrations I had created a while back for three of my food and wanderlust posts (check them out here, here and here).
To vote and/or purchase, you’ll probably need to create an account first, which is quite easy to do. There’s also a discount going on right now, so try not to miss that!
Ohh Deer have been doing these Pillow Fights for years now. I remember the first time I learnt about it, from Pinterest probably. That was many, many years ago, and I can still remember the cool pillows that caught my eye during that competition. You probably can find some of these cushion designs on one of my Pinterest boards, here.
So, let me tell you a little bit about the illustration on the Land of the Nomads pillow on Ohh Deer, cushion. The repeating motifs in the background are applied in an arbitrary fashion, and are inspired by local Jordanian kilims, found mainly in the biblical city of Madaba. This beautiful city, a favourite of mine, is rich with Christian-era mosaics and ancient churches that attract tourists and pilgrims from all over the world on a yearly basis.
The kilims are handmade from 100% wool using large looms. Some of these shops have these wooden looms on display and can tell you everything you need about how their products are made.
The main illustrations are inspired by the wild life and heritage of this beautiful Middle Eastern country. Here you can see birds from the Azraq Wetland Reserve, a migratory stopover for birds from three continents. You can also see ruins from the Roman city of Jerash, as well as the famous Arabian Oryx, a local deer protected within the natural reserve of Wadi Rum in the south. If you want to learn more about the rest of the illustrations on the cushion, please feel free to read my post here.
